Gimp 2.8: Install brushes

Installing new brushes in Gimp is very easy. Once you find a set of brushes you wish to install simply follow the steps below and you will be up and running within a couple of minutes.

on Ubuntu

  1. Find the set of gimp brushes you want to install.
  2. Open the following folder Home > .gimp-2.8 > brushes this is a hidden folder so you will need to make hidden folders visible. To do this open your home folder and go View > Show Hidden Files or Ctrl + H
  3. Extract the contents of the zip file to this folder
  4. To access the new brushes you will either need to:
    1. Restart Gimp or
    2. From the top right of the Brushes menu (windows > Dockable Dialogs > Brushes) click on the small arrow and then Brushes Menu > Refresh to allow you to access the new brushes

on Windows

  1. Find the set of gimp brushes you want to install.
  2. Open the following folder C:\Users\xxxxx\.gimp-2.8\brushes. Assuming you have followed the default install process.
  3. Add your unzipped brushes to this folder
  4. To access the new brushes you will either need to:
    1. Restart Gimp or
    2. From the top right of the Brushes menu (windows > Dockable Dialogs > Brushes) click on the small arrow and then Brushes Menu > Refresh to allow you to access the new brushes
